Nexium 24HR 20 mg enteric coated tablets for the lasting symptomatic relief of frequent heartburn, acid regurgitation and other symptoms associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux.
Always take this medicine exactly as described in the Consumer Medicine Information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist have told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. The recommended dose is one tablet a day. - Do not take more than this recommended dose of one tablet (20 mg) a day, even if you don't feel an improvement immediately. - You may need to take Nexium 24HR for a few days before experiencing the full effect. - Nexium 24HR should be taken for at least 7 days and up to 14 days. - Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you do not feel better while taking Nexium 24HR. If symptoms persist or recur within 2 weeks of completing the course, consult your doctor. Further examination may be required.
Always read the label, use only as directed. Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you notice any of the following and they worry you: nausea or vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, headache, wind, stomach pain, skin rash, itchy skin, dizziness or dry mouth. These side effects are usually mild. A few years ago, we thought we were getting a new kind of heartburn. A recent study found that the drug Nexium (esomeprazole) may be associated with increased heartburn risk.
The study was done with the aim of identifying potential drug interactions.
The results were surprising but important: Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks the acid produced in the stomach lining by blocking the production of proton pumps, which is why Nexium is often called “the purple pill”. The study did not control for other cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking and family history of heart disease, which could potentially cause increased heartburn. It also had a small sample size but no placebo-controlled studies.
In addition, the study also showed that patients taking Nexium were significantly more likely to have heart attack than the placebo group, but that the difference was not statistically significant.
Nexium is one of the most commonly prescribed PPIs in the United States. A study on the use of proton pump inhibitors in patients with heart disease found that patients taking proton pump inhibitors were three times more likely to be diagnosed with heart attack than those on a placebo.
The study also found that patients taking proton pump inhibitors were twice as likely to have heart attacks than those on a placebo. However, patients taking proton pump inhibitors may not have suffered from heartburn at all. This may be due to the lack of a control group.
Other studies have also found that proton pump inhibitors can increase the risk of cardiovascular death, a type of heart disease that occurs when the immune system attacks the heart. Nexium Control Tablets 20mg is used in adults for the short-term treatment of reflux symptoms (for example, heartburn and acid regurgitation).
Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (“foodpipe”) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause you symptoms such as a painful sensation in the chest rising up to your throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
Nexium Control is not meant to bring immediate relief. You may need to take the tablets for 2-3 days in a row before you feel better. You must talk to a doctor if you do not feel better or if you feel worse after 14 days.
